RP to further develop palm-oil industry, surveys suitable farms.
The Philippines is now eyeing to further develop the local palm-oil industry starting with the survey of farmlands suitable to palm-oil plantations in Bukidnon.
This was disclosed by Jesus Arranza, member of the Philippine Coconut Authority’s (PCA) governing board and incoming president and chief executive officer of the CIIF Oil Mills Group.
“The PCA is set to conduct a topographic survey of around 100,000 hectares of farmlands in Bukidnon. This way, we have something to show investors in terms of where they can locate,” Arranza told reporters in a briefing in Quezon City yesterday.
Arranza said the survey is part of a program approved by the PCA three months ago. He, however, could not say how much money was allocated to the initiative.
The PCA is looking for “contiguous farmlands” as it would be costly for investors to locate plantations and mills in different areas, Arranza explained.
“You have to process palm immediately because delaying the processing would affect the quality of the oil,” Arranza added.
The incoming CIIF official said he is willing to join efforts that encourage investors, particularly Malaysians and Indonesians to locate in the Philippines. Read the rest of this entry »
The Philippines government is seeking investors from neighboring countries Malaysia and Indonesia to further develop the local palm oil industry.
Manila will also begin the survey of farmlands in Bukidnon that are suitable to oil palm plantations, said Jesus Arranza, incoming president of the Coconut Industry Investment Fund and member of the governing board of the Philippine Coconut Authority.
“The PCA will conduct a topographic survey of around 100,000 hectares of farmlands in Bukidnon. This way, we have something to show investors in terms of where they can locate,” Arranza said.
The topographic survey is part of a program approved by the PCA three months ago, he said.
Contiguous areas will be preferred by the PCA since it will be more cost-effective for investors to locate their plantations and milling plants in one area.
“The plantation and plant should be near each other to allow immediate processing to avoid deterioration of the quality of the oil,” said Arranza. Read the rest of this entry »
Palm Oil comes from the fruit of a palm tree, a tropical species that originated in West Africa, but now grows as hybrid in many parts of the world, including Southeast Asia and Central America. The relatively low priced oil is used for a variety of purposes. The world’s demand for palm oil has soared high in the last two decades first, for its use in food, consumer products and more recently as the raw material for biofuel.
Palm Oil has a variety of uses from food to cosmetics, medicines, lubricants, fertilizers and as biofuel. It is the second most traded vegetable oil in the world next to soybean oil (Casson, 1999). It is also now being used as an ingredient in biodiesel and as a fuel to be burnt in power stations to produce electricity. Thus, there is an increase in the global demand for the commodity.
