Oil palm is not just an ordinary crop; it has many distinctive features not shared by other crops.  Among the four crops producing 83% of the world vegetable oil, oil palm ranks on top in terms of volume and percentage of production.  The percentage contribution of the four crops in vegetable oil production stands at 32.3, 26.23, 16.1 and 8.2%, for palmoil, soybean, rapeseed, and sunflower, respectively (Fig. 1).  Palmoil also outranked the three other major vegetable oil crops in terms of oil yield.  Palm oil yields 3.65 t of oil/ha per year as compared to 0.37, 0.75 and 0.50 t/ha per year for soybean, rapeseed and sunflower, respectively.  Moreover, among these four crops oil palm utilizes the smallest total area for production as shown in figure 2.  Palm oil is planted in only 14.6 million ha representing 6% only of the area being utilized for vegetable oil production.  Among the four major vegetable oil crops, palmoil is easy to farm, less affected by climate change and with the lowest cost of production/volume of oil produce.
